Dermal Fillers in Annapolis, MD
Dermal fillers are a fast and effective way to reduce the effects of facial aging without surgery. Over time, the skin on our faces loses resilience and starts to develop wrinkles and creases. The underlying fat tissue can start to thin, too. Dermal fillers have an astonishing ability to soften and smooth facial lines and wrinkles and restore facial volume, especially to the cheeks, chin, and lips. They can even fill in acne scars. The subtle, natural-looking changes dermal fillers create help you recapture youthful facial structure and reduce lines – all with no surgery and no downtime for recovery.
If your goal is to restore a younger look by erasing lines and wrinkles or reshaping areas of your face that have lost volume, Dr. Henry Sandel and Dr. Claire Duggal are experts in the aesthetic application of dermal fillers. What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that can restore a younger look when injected below facial skin. Different types of fillers can create various rejuvenating effects. Some soften and smooth lines and wrinkles, while others add volume to hollow areas or plump the lips for an enticing pout. Most fillers’ formulas include substances that occur naturally in the body, including hyaluronic acid and poly-L-lactic acid. All are FDA-approved for cosmetic use. We can even use your fat tissue to create a long-lasting filler by harvesting fat cells using liposuction from a part of your body, processing them, and injecting them where you want to add more volume.

What Different Dermal Fillers do?
At Sandel Duggal Plastic Surgery and Medspa, we offer a full line of facial filler options. Each type of filler works best for specific facial improvements, and we may recommend using different fillers in various parts of your face.
Juvéderm® is a smooth gel dermal filler that contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring compound found in skin and connective tissue. Juvéderm® works by adding immediate volume and rehydrating the skin. It also stimulates collagen production. Different formulations of Juvéderm® serve for different purposes: to smooth away wrinkles, especially the fine lines around the mouth, and to add fullness to the lips and cheeks. A single Juvéderm® treatment can last for six to 18 months.
Voluma® is a thicker filler that is injected deep beneath the surface of the skin. It is used mostly in the midface and cheeks to lift and restore volume. Voluma is one of our most sought after fillers because it gives patients a lifted appearance to the face without surgery. Dr. Sandel and Dr. Duggal are experts in “liquid facelift” procedures that restore the natural volume in the cheeks without looking overdone. Because Voluma® is thicker than most fillers, it can last longer. Many patients see results up to a year or two after treatment.
Restylane®, like Juvéderm®, consists of hyaluronic acid. The gel injections add immediate volume and help the underlying tissue absorb and retain moisture. That moisturizing effect, plus the stimulation of collagen production, builds volume in the treated areas while smoothing surface complexion. Restylane® fills lines and wrinkles – especially around the nose and mouth – plumps the lips and adds fullness to the lower part of the face. Results of a Restylane® treatment typically last for six months to a year.
Restylane Kysse® is a brand-new filler on the US market, just introduced in May 2020. It is the first filler that is FDA approved for injection into the lips. Restylane Kysse is excellent at giving definition to the cupids bow and enhancing natural lip volume.
Restylane Lyft® is a formulation of Restylane with larger particles. It can correct more severe wrinkles and creases and add volume to the cheeks and lower face. It can also be used to create more definition along the jawline and cheekbones. Treatments with Restylane Lyft® typically last for about six months.
Sculptra™ is an ideal injectable to fill in cheeks that have begun to appear hollow and gaunt and for softening deep lines and folds around the mouth. It works by stimulating the production of collagen in your skin. Unlike other fillers, which add volume immediately, Sculptra™ works more gradually. Treatment with Sculptra™ involves a series of injections and it takes a little time for the results to appear. Because it builds volume by stimulating the growth of your tissue, the results have a soft, natural look and last for a long time — an average of two years!
Radiesse® consists of a calcium compound found naturally in human bones (but manufactured biosynthetically) and is an excellent choice for improving facial contours. Radiesse can literally redesign and add volume to the face by filling hollows beneath the eyes, creating or refining your cheekbones, and sculpting the jawline. It can also fill creases around the mouth and on the forehead. The injected gel adds volume immediately, while stimulating the production of collagen for long-lasting results — typically a year or more.
Dermal Filler FAQs
Dermal filler treatment takes between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on how many areas of the face you are having treated.
You’ll have little or no downtime after a dermal filler treatment and should be able to resume your normal activities right away. Some patients experience mild bruising, swelling, or redness for a few days afterward. If this is the case for you, minimize these effects by applying ice packs.
Results last anywhere from a few months to two years — or longer for fat grafting. See the description of the different types of filler treatment for information about how long each typically lasts.
Yes. If you choose, we can combine dermal filler treatments with injections of Botox® or Dysport®, which work to relax facial muscles that cause expression lines. You may wish to consider fat grafting in conjunction with a facelift or eyelid surgery to enhance the rejuvenating effect.
