Mommy makeover with Dr. Claire Duggal

Mommy Makeover

Motherhood is a wonderful thing, but pregnancy and breastfeeding can take a toll on your body. A mommy makeover can reverse many of these changes — flattening and firming your abdomen, lifting and reshaping your breasts, tightening skin that has stretched, and eliminating stubborn bulges of fat.

What it includes

A customized combination, not a fixed package.

During a consultation, Dr. Duggal can help you choose the specific combination of procedures to address your needs. Most plans include some version of the following three.

Tummy tuck

Removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen and tightens and reconnects the abdominal muscles to achieve a flatter, more toned belly.

Breast surgery

A breast lift raises and reshapes breasts that have sagged, often combined with augmentation to increase volume or reduction to reduce size.

Liposuction

Removes unwanted fat from specific areas including the abdomen, back, love handles, arms, thighs, knees, calves, neck, or chest.

You may also choose to combine a mommy makeover with other surgical and non-surgical procedures, including fat grafting or facial rejuvenation.

What it addresses

Changes that diet and exercise cannot undo.

Significant weight gain and loss can have many of the same effects on a woman’s body, and a mommy makeover is just as effective in restoring younger, firmer contours in women who have not had children.

“An abdominoplasty is a wonderful way to restore a woman’s stomach after pregnancy and childbirth. Not only can we remove the excess skin and often the majority of any stretchmarks she has, but we can also tighten her abdominal muscles and restore a flat, strong abdomen.”

Am I a good candidate?

You should wait at least six months after childbirth for a tummy tuck, and several months after breastfeeding for breast surgery.

Future pregnancies or weight gain can reduce the beneficial changes from the procedures. It is best to wait until you are no longer planning to have more children before having a tummy tuck, in particular.

Nicotine in any form — cigarettes, cigars, vaping, chewing tobacco, patches, gum, or lozenges — must be stopped for at least four weeks before surgery and throughout your recovery.

In your consultation, Dr. Duggal will examine you to see if you may benefit from any of the mommy makeover procedures and review your health history to determine if surgery will be safe for you. Specific medical conditions create a higher risk of complications from plastic surgery.

What to expect in recovery

Your recovery will depend on the procedures you have. Most patients go home the day of surgery, though in some cases combined procedures may require an overnight stay with a nurse in our overnight suite.

Once home, expect some initial soreness and swelling. Most patients take about two weeks to rest and recover before resuming normal activities. You will need to avoid lifting anything heavy, so you may need help with meal preparation, chores, and caring for children.

Most patients can begin more strenuous activities after two weeks, building up gradually until they are fully recovered at about two months. Final results show after three or four months, once residual swelling has disappeared and your tissues have adapted.

Questions patients ask.

No. We call it a mommy makeover because it is so popular with mothers. Combining multiple cosmetic procedures can help any woman — and even men — with a wide range of issues.
