Deep peels with Dr. Sandel
35% TCA and phenol peels.
35% TCA (trichloroacetic acid) is the most common deep chemical peel performed at the Sandel Duggal Center. Dr. Sandel has years of experience performing these peels for patients with extensive sun damage on the face, neck, and chest. It has good benefit for improving fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, and discolorations.
The depth of the treatment is determined by the concentration of the chemical. Many day-spa TCA peels are around 10% or less — good for superficial smoothing, but not deep enough for significant improvement in skin color or texture. 35% TCA is much more effective and should only be performed by a surgeon specializing in these procedures.
Dr. Sandel uses this peel exclusively in the neck and chest, where it has been shown to be one of the most effective single treatments for improving the skin.
What the procedure involves
The TCA peel is most commonly performed in the operating room in combination with other cosmetic procedures.
The skin is cleaned and prepped with acetone to remove natural oils, then 35% TCA is applied with a cotton applicator or gauze in a single or double pass.
After a few minutes the skin develops a frost, signaling the end of the peeling process and the depth of penetration. The skin is then covered with a thin layer of Aquaphor to protect it while peeling takes place over 5 to 7 days.
The skin darkens on the surface and then peels away to reveal healthy skin underneath. This process is not painful. The skin may appear pink and splotchy for a few more weeks, which can be concealed with makeup if needed.
