Balance for the profile

This procedure is used alone or in combination with others such as rhinoplasty, facelift, or neck lift. The goal for any facial rejuvenation procedure is to restore or improve the natural contours of the face, and chin implants do this well.

Younger patients may opt to have a chin implant performed with their rhinoplasty. Often the goal of rhinoplasty is to improve the downward slope of the nose or a droopy nasal tip — an effect that is accentuated when the chin is weak or recessed. Augmenting the chin at the same time can give that extra perfected result and restore confidence in the profile.

Older patients considering surgery to improve the neckline and jawline may also benefit. Lower face and neck lifts lift and remove jowls, sharpen the jawline, and remove excess neck skin. A chin implant strengthens the front of the jawline, making the neckline more defined.

The procedure

Chin augmentation usually involves inserting an implant onto the bone of the chin. In some cases the chin bone can be reduced in size if it is naturally too strong, and sometimes liposuction is recommended to remove fatty tissue around the chin and neck.

An incision is made in the natural crease line under the chin or inside the lower lip. The tissues are lifted to accommodate the implant, which is constructed of synthetic yet natural-feeling materials. Implants come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and are placed under the covering of the bone so there is no risk of movement or displacement over the years.

Afterward you may feel a stretched, tight sensation. Some swelling and bruising in the chin area is natural and resolves in about a week.
