Laser skin treatments are effective cosmetic treatments to smooth skin texture and target acne breakouts. Patients can undergo one or more treatment sessions to expose their skin to light pulses to resolve acne and other skin issues. The end result is tighter skin, a reduction in acne lesions, and a reduction in oil that fuels acne bacteria.
Laser light is an acne treatment option aimed at reducing or preventing mild to moderate acne. The treatment can be effective in one of three ways.
- Destroys acne bacteria: Laser light can effectively trigger porphyrin excitement, which damages bacterial walls to help destroy acne bacteria. With less acne bacteria, there should be fewer acne breakouts.
- Reduces oil: Laser treatment can also reduce sebum levels, making your skin less prone to acne flare-ups.
- Anti-inflammatory: Acne is an inflammatory disease, and lasers have anti-inflammatory properties.
Be aware that you may need a minimum of three treatment sessions for optimal outcomes in reducing acne.
Superficial and Acne Scarring
Acne scarring is a result of excess collagen or tissue loss after a breakout. Laser skin resurfacing effectively reduces both types of scarring, but some laser treatments are more effective than others. The two primary laser treatment types are ablative and nonablative. Ablative is more invasive, removing superficial skin. Nonablative penetrates deeper tissues, leaving surface skin unharmed.
Ablative Laser Treatments
By removing the top layers of skin, ablative treatments correct uneven skin textures into a smooth, even exterior. After an ablative laser treatment, new collagen will fill in depressions for a smooth, soft skin surface.
As a more invasive form of therapy, ablative treatments typically require a longer recovery period.
Nonablative Laser Treatments
Nonablative treatments typically do not remove surface skin layers. However, they stimulate collagen production deep into the dermal tissues to add support to the skin surface, smooth its appearance, reduce skin redness, and increase scar tissue pliability.
