Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures in America. It is a minimally invasive procedure that uses small cannulas (thin surgical straws) to remove fat from unwanted areas on the body. A special numbing solution (tumescent fluid) is injected before beginning liposuction to minimize pain or bleeding. Almost any area on the body can be treated with liposuction to improve contour and shape including the abdomen, back, love handles, arms, inner and outer thighs, knees, calves, neck, or chest. Dr. Duggal’s technique includes separating the fat with a special cannula prior to beginning the liposuction and spreading the remaining fat out after liposuction helps to ensure a smooth, even, and beautiful contour after liposuction. The procedure can be combined with many other procedures including breast surgery, facelift or eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, and labiaplasty. The fat obtained from liposuction can also be gently washed and separated, and then re-injected into a different area of the body such as the breast or buttocks to further enhance body shape and contour.
Who is a good candidate?
Liposuction is a wonderful sculpting tool for patients who are at a healthy body weight for their height but have localized areas of fat that have been difficult to address through exercise alone. Liposuction is not a substitute for healthy lifestyle habits including a well-balanced diet and regular exercise, and it is not a weight-loss tool.
Good candidates for liposuction are:
- of average or just above average BMI (body mass index)
- have reasonably firm, elastic skin
- have localized areas of fat/bulge they would like improved
What is the recovery like?
Liposuction is most often done under general anesthesia, but small areas could be done with sedation and local anesthetic. Tiny stab incisions will be made for a cannula to be introduced, which is used to suck out the fat.
Unless a significant amount of fat is being removed, the majority of patients can go home on the day of surgery. You will have a compression garment in place and small dissolvable sutures in the stab incisions. You can expect to be sore, bruised, and swollen for several days. Most patients can go back to work within a few days but can remain bruised for a few weeks. It may be up to 6 weeks before all the swelling has resolved and you see your final result.
What are the possible complications?
Most side effects from liposuction, such as bruising, swelling, numbness, and discomfort, are temporary. It is unusual but possible to have irregularities in the skin or contour following liposuction. It is very uncommon to have an infection or serious complication.
What can I expect during my consultation?
When you arrive at the office, a medical history will be taken to find out about any medical problems or allergies you have and what medications you are on. Together, you and Dr. Duggal will discuss which areas of your body bother you and how these can be addressed by liposuction to create a more shapely, defined, and proportionate appearance. Pictures will be taken of your areas of concern, and you and Dr. Duggal will make a surgical plan.
