Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing uses precisely controlled laser light to smooth facial wrinkles and lines, remove scars, and treat areas of discoloration.

Different types of lasers treat various skin complexions and problems. Ablative laser treatments remove the top layer of skin to stimulate the growth of new and smoother skin. Non-ablative laser treatments offer a gentler alternative to treat skin discoloration and stimulate new skin growth from below.

Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments

CO2 laser skin resurfacing improves skin texture and treats fine wrinkles and areas of darker pigmentation. This is the gold standard and most effective treatment for moderate to severe sun damage, fine lines, precancerous skin lesions and skin tightening.  It’s usually a one-time treatment.  I can last for many years especially if your skin is maintained with the help of our medical aestheticians at the Sandel Duggal Med Spa. Dr. Sandel and Dr. Duggal use the Lumenis Ultrapulse Encore CO2 laser platform, which consistently outperforms other CO2 lasers on the market.

Fractional CO2 laser skin rejuvenation penetrates deeper into the skin to treat deep wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin tone. This treatment breaks up the laser into thousands of pinpoint beams that reach lower layers of the skin, stimulating the production of collagen, a compound that helps moisturize the skin and keep it smooth and flexible.

Erbium laser resurfacing using the Halo laser platform can treat fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and skin laxity. This is an office-based treatment that is performed under topical anesthesia. It can be an excellent option for patient who seek less downtime.  Halo resurfacing can be repeated once or twice a year to help maintain beautiful skin.

Laser Skin Tightening

Laser skin tightening smooths wrinkles and tightens skin that has become lax with age, sun damage, or the stretching effects of weight fluctuations or pregnancy. It works by heating the outer and middle layers of the skin (the epidermis and dermis), triggering the growth of new and more resilient tissue. Laser skin tightening is one of the most effective ways to smooth and tighten moderately loose, wrinkly skin without surgery.

Some of the tightening effects are visible immediately, especially with facial treatments, while the full effects emerge over several weeks as your skin renews itself and collagen production increases. Depending on the intensity of the laser exposure, you may need several treatments spaced several weeks apart to achieve optimal results.

Laser skin tightening can even reduce and smooth the bumps and ripples of cellulite on the buttocks and thighs and, with longer exposures, reduce fat.

Laser hair removal works by heating and destroying hair follicles — the roots from which hairs grow. We can perform laser hair removal on virtually any part of the body, including the arms, abdomen, bikini area, chin, neck, sideburns, and upper lip.

New hair follicles develop over time in a natural cycle. For long-lasting hair elimination, laser hair removal requires a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart to target each wave of new hair growth in the cycle.

The treatment works best on people with darker hair and lighter skin, since the laser energy targets the pigment in the hair follicles. But we often see excellent results in using different types of lasers and varying levels of exposure to treat our patients with darker skin tones.

Broad band light (BBL) is one of the most popular laser treatments at the Sandel Duggal Center.  This is a simple office treatment that removes brown spots and sun damage.  Typically done in the face, neck and chest, BBL treatments are quick and relatively painless.  It takes about 3 treatments spaced 3 weeks apart for the best overall effect.  There is no swelling, bruising or redness after each treatment and patient typically go right back to work or social activities immediately.

Blood vessels at the surface of the skin are a common cause of redness and can be visible as spider veins or varicose veins. Laser vein treatment is a safe, effective, and relatively painless way to eliminate all but the largest of these surface veins, restoring even coloring to your skin.

The laser treatment heats and damages these surface veins without hurting the skin. Your circulatory system responds by diverting the blood flow to other veins and capillaries below the skin’s surface.

What to Expect During a Laser Treatment Procedure

We perform laser treatments in our office. Before the procedure, we may numb the targeted area with a topical anesthetic before thoroughly cleaning your skin and closely shaving the hair. Depending on the procedure, we might also offer you a sedative. For facial treatments, we’ll provide you with protective goggles.

During the treatment, we will move a precisely calibrated laser beam evenly over the treatment area, assuring an appropriate dose of laser energy. After finishing the procedure, we may cover the area with a dressing to promote healing.

Laser treatments usually take between 20 minutes and two hours, depending on the number and size of the treatment areas. If you have taken a sedative for the procedure, you will need to arrange for a ride home.

What to Expect in Recovery After Laser Treatment

Depending on the type and intensity of your laser treatment, you may experience some redness and swelling for a few days, especially after laser skin resurfacing. These issues will typically resolve on their own two or three days after mild treatment. After more intensive treatment, your skin may take one to three weeks to heal.

Many of our patients have compared their reaction after laser skin resurfacing to a sunburn — a mild one after light treatment, with some minor itching and peeling, and a more intense one after stronger treatment. Your new skin will be pink at first, then gradually lighten over two or three months to a fresh, even, smooth complexion.

Laser skin tightening, hair removal, and vein treatments typically result in milder reactions and faster recoveries. After all but the most intensive skin resurfacing treatments, patients can return to work and normal activities right away.

You will need to diligently protect the treated area from sun exposure.
