Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty in Annapolis, MD with Dr. Sandel

Rhinoplasty is a facial plastic surgery to reshape your nose, improving facial proportions and correcting specific types of breathing problems. Sometimes referred to as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping,” cosmetic rhinoplasty can reduce the size of a nose that is too large for the face, straighten a crooked nose or change the size and shape of the nose’s bridge or tip. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can make your nose look smaller, softer, more symmetrical and in better proportion with your face

Rhinoplasty surgery can also resolve breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or a collapsed nasal valve. A skilled surgeon can correct these issues at the same time as a cosmetic nose surgery for an overall improvement to breathing function and facial appearance. Insurance companies sometimes cover surgeries performed to correct breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging cosmetic surgeries to master, and double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Henry Sandel is a recognized expert and specialist in the procedure. Call us today at (410) 266-7120 or contact us online to schedule a consultation and learn more about the best rhinoplasty in Annapolis, MD, with our board-certified plastic surgeons.

Why Might You Consider Rhinoplasty?

It’s essential to note how the appearance of your nose relates to your other facial features. A small chin, for example, can make a perfectly proportional nose appear too large. In your consultation with Dr. Sandel, he will evaluate the combination of your facial features and recommend an approach to bring them into better harmony. Using photographic simulation from multiple angles, he will show you what your face will look like with the changes he recommends.

Are You a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

If you are in good health but are unhappy with the appearance of your nose, have suffered trauma to your nose or have difficulty breathing because of the anatomy of your nose, you are probably a good candidate for a rhinoplasty in Annapolis, Maryland. You may be well-qualified for revision rhinoplasty if you are unhappy with the results of a previous nasal surgery.

In your consultation with Dr. Sandel, he will examine your facial features, review your medical history and ask questions to understand your goals for the procedure. He will only recommend rhinoplasty if he is confident that it can improve your appearance or breathing, and that he can complete the procedure with minimal risk to your health.

Rhinoplasty Surgical Approaches

On Surgery Day

Rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure performed at our surgical center under general (light) anesthesia, monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Dr. Sandel will make an incision, either inside the nose or between the nostrils, to expose the bone and cartilage support system. Next, he will reshape the nose by removing, adding to or rearranging the structure.

Having completed the reshaping, Dr. Sandel will re-drape the tissues over the new framework and close the incisions. He may use a splint to support the newly shaped nose.

You will be able to go home the same day, once you have awoken from the anesthesia. You’ll need to make arrangements to have someone drive you home, and should have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

For about a week after your surgery, you’ll wear a splint to hold your nose in its new shape. You can also expect some minor swelling and bruising. Most patients return to work and other light activities after about a week, having removed the splint, though it is possible to return to work sooner. You’ll be able to gradually resume more strenuous activities starting at about two weeks. Dr. Sandel will provide you with care instructions during your recovery and will check on your progress in scheduled follow-up visits.

The swelling will decrease slowly and may come and go. By two weeks, the swelling is typically not noticeable to others. Your nose should be fully healed in about one to three months.

FAQs About Rhinoplasty Maryland

You can safely undergo rhinoplasty once your facial bones and cartilage have stopped growing. This milestone usually occurs at about age 15 for females and 16 for males but can vary by individual. A good guideline is your rate of growth as measured by your height and your shoe size. If your height and shoe size are increasing every six months, that’s a sign your skeletal structure is still growing. If your growth has slowed and you are within an inch or two of your projected adult height, your nose has probably matured enough to have rhinoplasty.

Your insurance policy may pay for medically necessary parts of a rhinoplasty procedure. If you have any difficulty breathing caused by a deviated septum or a closed or depressed nasal valve, your insurance company might be willing to cover some or all your surgical costs. However, insurance does not cover surgery to change the cosmetic appearance of the nose. Because Dr. Sandel can often improve both the form and function of your nose in the same procedure, an insurance benefit can greatly reduce the overall cost of your rhinoplasty.
