Labiaplasty

Annapolis Labiaplasty at Sandel Duggal Plastic Surgery

Labiaplasty corrects the problem of overly large inner labia or labia minora. Excessive labial tissue can cause discomfort and irritation when you’re engaging in everyday activities. It can be embarrassing when wearing tight clothing and bathing suits and in intimate situations. In some cases, the condition may make sexual intercourse painful.

Large labia might be something you are born with, like a prominent nose. Or, the problem can develop over time after weight loss, childbirth, or as part of the aging process. A labiaplasty procedure reduces the labia minora so they do not hang below the outer labia or labia majora.

As a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Claire Duggal appreciates the sensitive and discreet nature of this issue. Unfortunately, many women are unaware a surgical treatment exists that can correct this uncomfortable problem. But as the word spreads, more and more women are requesting the procedure.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size or change the shape of the labia minora, the inner pair of “lips” surrounding the vagina. (The outer labia, which grow hair, are called the labia majora. In some cases, Dr. Duggal can perform labiaplasty to reduce the size of the labia majora.) The procedure can also correct asymmetry between the labia for a more even appearance.

Why You Might Consider Labiaplasty

Women choose to undergo labiaplasty for several very personal reasons. The procedure can:

  • Help reduce discomfort or pain from twisting and tugging of the labia while exercising, riding a bike, or wearing tight clothing
  • Prevent pain and tearing of the tissue when the labia get pulled into the vagina during sex
  • Eliminate the risk of the labia coming out of a bathing suit or underwear
  • Improve the labia’s overall appearance
  • Improve the symmetry between the labia

Remember, there is tremendous variety in the size and appearance of women’s inner and outer labia and no “ideal” appearance. You should certainly consider labiaplasty if you are uncomfortable with how your labia look. Still, this procedure aims to make your anatomy more discreet. Each outcome will be unique depending on the size and shape of your labia majora, clitoral hood, and labia minora. Please visit our before & after gallery for labiaplasty patients.

What Happens During a Baltimore Labiaplasty?

Dr. Duggal most often performs labiaplasty while patients are resting under local anesthesia in the privacy of our West Annapolis procedure room. After administering anesthesia, Dr. Duggal applies a potent numbing cream to the vaginal area about 30 minutes before performing the labiaplasty procedure. She then uses a tiny needle to add injectable numbing medicine, which eliminates any discomfort. Patients often choose to use our ProNox machine for added relaxation during the procedure.

If you have the procedure done under local anesthesia, you may drive yourself home afterward. Some patients prefer to have their labiaplasty under sedation or general anesthesia. This surgery can be part of a mommy makeover, combined with other procedures like breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck.

Dr. Duggal employs one of two surgical approaches. Both approaches restore a more tailored and discreet appearance to the labia minora, and she will discuss with you during your consultation which approach is more appropriate for your individual anatomy. The procedure usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes.  All sutures are dissolvable, although some may be trimmed during follow-up appointments.

Edge trim involves removal of the excess or protruding edges of the inner labia.

Wedge resection maintains the original edges of the labia minora by cutting wedge-shaped slivers of tissue out of the center of the labia and pulling the remaining tissue together.

What to Expect in Recovery

Cold packs and anti-inflammatory pain medication will help you manage swelling and discomfort for the first few days following surgery. Then, you can resume light activity one or two days after surgery. Still, you can expect to have some bruising and swelling for another week or two. Some residual swelling may last for up to six months.

Most patients take a week off from work. Then, after four to six weeks, you can resume wearing tampons, exercising more strenuously, and having intercourse.

Dr. Duggal will schedule follow-up visits with you to ensure you are healing well.

Commonly Asked Questions About Annapolis Labiaplasty

As with all plastic surgery procedures, well-qualified labiaplasty patients are in good overall health, do not smoke or are willing to quit, and have realistic expectations. During your consultation with Dr. Duggal, she can explain whether the procedure will address your specific concerns.

The risks associated with labiaplasty include those of most surgical procedures, including bleeding, infection, and wound healing complications. However, these are minor, and you can minimize them by carefully following post-operative instructions. Dr. Duggal will talk more with you regarding your specific risks from surgery during your consultation

You don’t have to wait to be finished with pregnancies for labiaplasty. If you are entirely healed, childbearing should have no apparent effect on your labia.

We ask you to wait at least six weeks to give your body time to heal and fully recover.
